There is a healthcare crisis in America today, and many progressive hospitals and healthcare networks are embracing Quality Tools and Lean Techniques as a way of increasing their efficiency and improving patient satisfaction.
Many quality professionals and engineers are finding new ways to apply lessons from industry to the new frontier in healthcare. Denis Devos spent several years working with the Improving Performance in Practice (IPIP) project in Michigan to advance quality principles in individual doctor's offices. As a result of this work, one of our case studies was presented by the American Society for Quality to a group of congressional leaders in Washington. After only one year, three of our clients' practices demonstrated a marked increase in clinical quality scores for diabetes treatment, and each of them were awarded the prestigious Patient Centered Medical Home designation by Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
Our approach is to use proven quality management and Lean tools to define processes, identify waste, and put measures of effectiveness in place for each of them. In every case, the breakthrough ideas were already present among the staff, and our role is to mentor the practice and apply the best tools and guidance to bring them forward.
